house
Cambridge, Canada / Fall 2018
Designed to serve as a dwelling for two artists, the House brings a tranquility to an unnatural world. The Writer and Instrument Maker are able to find the inspiration of a natural world within their home, complimented by the inspiration brought by the House’s urban setting.
Reinforcing this balance stimulates the flow of creativity throughout the building and its inhabitants.
Understanding the world outside of the House reveals a contrast to its interior:
The Unnatural holds us in. Cold stone, rough concrete.
It blinds us. It is further understood through touch. A manufactured reality can be felt with the fingertips.
Polycarbonate sheathing is used to clad the House. It allows in light yet creates a visual separation between interior and unnatural exterior. Wooden columns continue from inside out, hinting to what may be found within.
Elements inspired by the anatomy of a forest can be found throughout the building. Wooden columns hold the platforms from which the House is made up, representing the trunks of a forest’s trees.
A perforated paper-fibre canopy hangs above the platforms, acting the way a forest’s canopy would. The speckled, diffused light changes throughout the day to bring life to the House.
